Alpaca yarn is spun from the fleece of alpacas, a South American camelid. It is softer than most sheep's wool, naturally hypoallergenic, warmer by weight than merino, and has a beautiful drape and subtle halo. Unlike wool, alpaca contains no lanolin, making it an excellent choice for people with wool sensitivity.

Yes — alpaca yarn is lovely to work with and forgiving to knit or crochet. The main thing beginners should know is that alpaca has less elasticity than wool, so it is better suited to relaxed, drapey styles than fitted or highly structured patterns. An alpaca/merino blend is often the ideal starting point as it combines softness with a little more structure.

Pure alpaca yarn is the most luxurious but has very little stretch, which can cause garments to grow and lose their shape over time. Alpaca blend yarns — most commonly mixed with merino wool or nylon — add elasticity and durability while retaining alpaca's warmth and softness. For garments, a blend is usually more practical; for shawls, wraps and accessories, pure alpaca is a beautiful choice.

The Orry Mill in Eaglesham, near Glasgow, is an independent yarn shop stocking a curated range of alpaca and alpaca-blend yarns from brands including Rowan, Drops, West Yorkshire Spinners and Isager. You can shop in store in Eaglesham or order online at theorrymill.co.uk with delivery across the UK.

It depends on the yarn. Pure alpaca should generally be hand washed in cool water and laid flat to dry. Many alpaca blend yarns — particularly those blended with superwash merino — are machine washable on a gentle or wool cycle. Always check the ball band of the specific yarn before washing.
