Alpaca vs Wool: What's the Difference?

Merino has natural elasticity and memory, which makes it forgiving for colourwork, cables and structured garments. Alpaca has very little elasticity, which gives it that characteristic flowing drape but means it can grow in length over time, particularly in heavier weights. Blending the two — as many brands do — gives you the best of both: the softness and warmth of alpaca with the structure and resilience of merino.

Pure alpaca is also significantly warmer than wool by weight, making a lightweight alpaca yarn perform like a heavier wool. If you run cold or are knitting for someone who does, alpaca is worth the investment.

What Can You Knit with Alpaca Yarn?

Alpaca yarn is remarkably versatile. Its natural warmth and softness make it ideal for:

Caring for Alpaca Yarn Projects

Alpaca garments are long-lasting when cared for correctly. Most alpaca yarns are best hand washed in cool water with a gentle wool wash, then laid flat to dry. Avoid wringing or hanging, as alpaca's weight when wet can cause it to stretch. Many alpaca blends — particularly those combined with superwash merino — are machine washable on a wool or delicate cycle; always check the individual yarn's ball band.

Because alpaca lacks lanolin, it doesn't felt in the same way as wool — but it can still be damaged by heat and agitation, so cool and gentle is always the rule.
