Knitting for Olive
About Knitting for Olive
Knitting for Olive began as a small family project in Copenhagen in 2015 — a mother and daughter creating knitting patterns for babies and toddlers, born out of a love for making things for the people around them. The brand grew quickly, expanding into children's sizes and, from 2018, adult patterns too. Today Knitting for Olive is one of the most recognisable names in contemporary Scandinavian knitting design, known for clean, wearable silhouettes, an exceptional colour palette, and a genuine commitment to transparency in how their yarn is made.
The brand is based in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen, and is surrounded by children — which shows in their designs. Their patterns are characterised by simple construction, modern proportions, and the kind of considered detailing that makes a finished garment worth reaching for every time.
The Yarn
Knitting for Olive's three core yarn bases are designed to work both independently and together — the defining feature of their system is that the weights are compatible for stranding.
Merino is 100% non-mulesed merino wool from certified farms in Patagonia, where mulesing is not practised. It is soft, warm and available in a wide range of colours. It works at fingering to light DK tension and is the foundation yarn of the KFO system.
Soft Silk Mohair is a blend of 70% traceable kid mohair and 30% cruelty-free mulberry silk. The silk fibres are collected using a bourette process that allows the moths to emerge from the cocoon naturally before harvesting — no silkworms are harmed. Held alongside Merino, it creates a fabric with a soft halo and added warmth. It can also be knitted double for a fuller, fluffier result.
Pure Silk is spun from 100% bourette silk using the same cruelty-free process as the mohair's silk content. It has a naturally rustic, slightly uneven texture that gives finished garments character and drape. It is particularly well suited to spring and summer tops and dresses, and can be stranded with Soft Silk Mohair for a more luxurious winter weight fabric.
All Knitting for Olive yarns are Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, traceable to farm level, and packaged using recycled paper labels and reused materials wherever possible.
Knitting Kits
The majority of our Knitting for Olive stock is kits — each one containing the exact yarn quantities needed for a specific pattern, often with the pattern included or sold alongside. Kits range from quick beginner-friendly baby projects through to adult sweaters and cardigans at intermediate and advanced levels. They make an ideal gift for a knitter at any stage, removing the work of calculating yarn quantities and colour-matching.
Current kits in stock include baby garments such as the Garter Cardigan Baby and Theo Pants Baby, children's pieces including the Hans Sweater Junior and Fern Dress Junior, and adult projects including the Fern Tee, Molly Tee and Puff Tee. Stock changes seasonally — check back for new arrivals or visit us in store in Eaglesham, Glasgow.
