Anchor originated in Paisley, Scotland in 1866, when the Clark family developed a fine thread for weaving. In 1896 they merged with fellow Paisley manufacturers J&P Coats. Anchor is now part of DMC SAS and manufactures its threads in Europe, but its Scottish roots remain a core part of the brand's identity — and Paisley is just a few miles from The Orry Mill.

Yes. Many of Anchor's cotton threads are produced to Oeko-Tex Standard 100, meaning they are independently tested and certified free from harmful substances including banned dyes and allergenic dyestuffs. pH values are regularly tested to ensure the products will not irritate skin, making them suitable for clothing and items intended for babies and children.

Anchor Stranded Cotton is a 6-strand divisible thread, allowing you to separate strands for finer or heavier coverage depending on your project — it's the most versatile choice for cross stitch and embroidery. Anchor Pearl Cotton is a twisted, non-divisible thread with a natural sheen, giving a bolder, more textured finish. Pearl Cotton is commonly used for whole cross stitch, hardanger, and decorative hand stitching where a pronounced texture is wanted.
